Our Mission...
...is to provide our students with high quality, nutritious foods that support lifelong healthy eating habits.
June 14 thru July 29.....FREE LUNCH!
One of the benefits of summer school is that it provides meals to many of our needy students. Due to budget cuts, Twin Rivers was only able to open three sites for Summer School this year
But that doesn't mean our students have to go hungry. Federal funding is available for feeding children when school is out. There are no applications to fill out, no qualifying, no sign-ups, The only requirements are that you have to be 18 years or younger and the meal has to be eaten at the location it is being served. Once again, no district funds are used for this program, it is 100% federally funded and can ONLY be used for feeding children.
With this funding, the Twin Rivers Nutrition Services Department opened 18 of its school sites, including the summer school sites, for this purpose.
Many sites were open from June 14th through July 22nd, Monday through Thursday.
The sites listed below will remain open through July 29th.
EVERY MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY IS PIZZA DAY!
Dominos Pizza is rolling out a new, healthier "Smart Slice" Pizza. We will be offering this new pizza at least one day a week at these sites. The new pizza has the same great taste as Dominos traditional pizza but with a whole grain crust, reduced sodium sauce, and light mozzarella cheese.

Do You Qualify for a Free or Reduced-Price Meal?
We understand the financial challenges that many families face today. If you feel you may qualify for meals free of charge or at a reduced rate, please complete a Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application and return it to your school as soon as possible. An application is available for you to download in the box below this message.
Filling out and returning an application may not only provide YOU with the benefit of saving money, but the statistical results of the pool of applications we receive determine the level of funding your SCHOOL receives for many of its programs.
MORE QUALIFYING APPLICATIONS = MORE SCHOOL $$$$$
Even if you don't think you will qualify, we urge you to submit a meal application.
Please help us avoid teacher lay-offs and further cuts to programs and services.
It only takes a minute to fill out the application and it doesn't cost a thing!
After your application is submitted, it will be reviewed and eligibility will be determined. If you do not receive a decision notification in the mail within 15 days of your submission, please call this office at 566-1600 ext 1525.

Food Safety in our Cafeterias
School cafeterias across the nation are mandated to receive health inspections twice per year. The purpose of these inspections is to ensure that our facilities and workers are complying with safety and sanitation requirements - from checking food temperatures to wearing gloves.
The Sacramento County Environmental Health Department does an excellent job at making sure this mandate is met. Every permitted cafeteria in the Twin Rivers School District has received their required number of inspections with a 100% "PASS" rate.
But we don't stop there, we self-inspect our sites on a regular basis. Every kitchen has at least one staff member that has taken a food handlers course and earned a food safety certificate. Our Field Supervisors and Management staff are constantly visiting our cafeterias to ensure our staff follow safe food handling practices. We have developed and recently initiated a "Site Standard" inspection to ensure that every area of food safety in our cafeterias are checked.

Letter from the Director
7/8/2010
The Twin Rivers Nutrition Services Department welcomes you to another new exciting school year. You will see significant changes in our menus as we continue to grow and develop. Throughout the district, our menus will become more diverse and include more scratch cooking, whole grains, dark green and orange vegetables, and legumes. Thanks to our produce supplier, we will be expanding our salad bar program. We hope these changes will aid our efforts to encourage healthy, life-long eating habits in our students.
2009/2010 Significant Achievements:
- We obtained a $24,000 grant to pilot a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Grant at Aero Haven Elementary School. This year's grant recipient is Northwood Elementary
- During the course of the school year, we served over 4.5 million meals and over 300,000 snacks
- Over the summer we provided over 40,000 healthy and nutritious meals, free of charge, to the children in our community and our summer school students
- We opened a student snack bar at Smythe Middle School and a Snack Bar in partnership with the student store at Grant High School
- We partnered with our vendors to provide a food show at Smythe Middle School for our secondary student leadership teams
- We obtained a $70,000 grant for serving line upgrades at Grant High School
- We successfully passed a Coordinated Review Effort (State Audit) and a School Meal Initiative (Menu/Nutrition Audit) in February of 2010. In September of 2009 we passed our Summer Feeding Vendor Review
--------IMPORTANT MESSAGE--------
Once again... with school budgets being drastically cut, it's more important than ever to utilize every financial resource available. The meal application that is distributed at the beginning of the school year not only provides students with the opportunity to receive school meals free or at a reduced rate, the economic data that is derived from these applications provide
WITHOUT THIS DATA YOUR CHILD'S SCHOOL COULD LOSE MUCH NEEDED FUNDING!
Please fill out the enclosed meal application and return it to your child's school as soon as possible. A new meal application MUST be filled out every new school year. If you are eligible for benefits and you do not fill out a new application by September 24th, 2010 your student will be charged full-price for meals. If you do not wish to participate in the program, please write "decline" on the application along with your student's name and return it to your student's school. The personal information you provide on the application is confidential and used only for the purpose of determining your student's eligibility for free or reduced-price meals. Only the statistics gathered from these applications are used to determine the economic makeup of your school. If you need help filling out the application, please call 916-566-1612.
Electronic submission of meal applications will be available very soon; we hope to have this program in place before the beginning of the school year. For updates and valuable information, please continue to visit us online.
